We’re all learning better practices in web design, and that’s a good thing. But designing a website isn’t a simple recipe, and while it’s important to make a website useful, they don’t have to all look the same.Things are placed where they are because they make sense, and the user has expectations based on using other websites. That’s not a bad thing, but in order to create memorable websites, we need to look at the actual content and design consciously. But it’s not just WHERE things are, it’s also WHAT they look like: Web 2.0 elements such as subtle drop shadows and gradients are rampant. Sure, the web is looking much nicer than it did a few years ago, but at the same time, websites have increasingly following the same patterns.

Not all images are created equal. The right image on a web page can capture attention, inform, and even persuade your site visitors. The right image can communicate who you and your company are more quickly and powerfully than words alone can do. The wrong image, however, can confuse, annoy, and even repel your visitors. The wrong image can give your audience a negative impression of your product, service, or company that you may never have a chance to correct.

Since the selection of images can be so crucial, I plan to cover the topic in three separate articles, each covering guidelines that will help you learn to evaluate and select just the right images for your site.

For those who may not have come across the term, what is “content strategy” and what is its relation to web design?

Content strategy for the Web plans for the creation, delivery, and governance of content online. Basically, its tools and processes help you get your content right the first time – for your business and your users -and keep it awesome over time.

Web design is critically important for shaping users’ perceptions of your brand, products, and services. However, they don’t come to your website for its great design; they come for the content. Design and content have to work together to ensure one is complementing the other… so they’re working together to provide a satisfying, enjoyable experience for your users. Content strategy ensures that dialogue is taking place on an ongoing basis. If you’re not designing for the right content, your user experience suffers. Which means your company does, too.
